Dr. Stan Hyland invited to become an inaugural member of the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship

Message from the Head of SUAPP, Dr. Stan Hyland

Dr. Stan Hyland, head of the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and professor of anthropology at the University of Memphis, has been invited to become an inaugural member of the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES).

The mission of the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship shall be to serve the public good by recognizing and contributing to high quality scholarship that—in active collaboration with participating community partners—has a positive impact on complex societal needs and issues. Through the involvement of leading community engagement scholars and practitioners, and their most knowledgeable, collaborative, and effective community counterparts, ACES will explore critical and complex societal and community issues and provide recommendations, upon request, to inform local, regional, national, and international research and policy agendas. For the past 48 years, Hyland has been involved in major community initiatives throughout Shelby County, including Uptown, the University District, College Park and Lakeland. His contribution to the Anthropology Department at the University of Memphis has made it one of the premier applied programs in the country. “His work has addressed issues of community civic capacity and empowerment; financial, racial and gender equity; affordable quality housing and place making; and environmental sustainability,” Dr. David Cox, professor in the Division of Public and Nonprofit Administration, said in his nomination. “As a collaborator, he is unparalleled. This is reflected in co-authored grants and publications.”
As a scholar, Hyland has published 36 journal articles and book chapters, including 12 advancing the theory of engaged scholarship.
An induction ceremony will be held Oct. 7 in Edmonton, Canada.
