Smart City Memphis reports interesting tax information comparing Shelby and Desoto Counties

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has put out a study showing that taxes have little influence on where people move. Yet, Dr. Jeff Wallace, research associate professor, and research assistants Katie Graffam, Katie McKeel who is a former HCD Fellow, and David Taylor at the University of Memphis’ Sparks Bureau of Business and Economic Research, argue that people in Memphis are motivating by moving to areas with lower taxes, which often attracts people to the suburbs of Memphis. This study demonstrates that in many of these suburbs people actually pay higher taxes than they would in Memphis.
